GVI Daily Update

Growth is holding, but the price of growth is not — the AI Supercycle is running into the cost of capital.

“The next AI winners will not own the most intelligence. They will own the widest productivity spread.”

The message from today's data is decisive: growth is holding, but the price of growth is not.

US services remain strong — ISM 54.9, new orders 59.8. But prices paid surged to 74.0, the highest since 2022, while export orders collapsed to 46.9. Simultaneously, the US 10-year Treasury touched 5.35%.

Germany moves the other way. Its composite PMI rose to 53.8, the strongest in almost a year; services returned decisively to expansion, employment increased and investment demand strengthened.

The result: US −0.1 to 94.0. Germany +0.1 to 83.3. Global GVI unchanged at 108.0. The AI Supercycle is not running out of growth. It is running into the price of capital.

leadership intact, hurdle rising

The top of the table is unchanged, but the hurdle beneath it is rising.

Five Signals

where Velocity is being made and lost

  1. The US economy is still expanding strongly. That is no longer unequivocally bullish. Strong orders plus rising prices plus 5.35% Treasuries mean the economy is too resilient for capital to become cheap again quickly. signal: Resilient demand is today's principal decelerator.

  2. Germany is no longer merely a manufacturing rebound. Services, employment and investment are joining the recovery. The composite PMI at 53.8 crosses the GVI threshold for a +0.1 upgrade. signal: Europe's industrial core is beginning to regain Velocity.

  3. Euro-area composite activity reached 53.1, its strongest since April 2023, while export orders expanded for the first time in 39 months. But pricing pressure is rising simultaneously. signal: Europe is escaping stagnation without escaping higher-for-longer.

  4. Schneider Electric's agreed $22.6 billion PTC acquisition captures the next phase: electrical infrastructure converging with engineering software, industrial data and AI. The market's reaction mattered equally — Schneider shares fell sharply. signal: Strategic logic is no longer enough. The market wants returns.

  5. The 10-year Treasury above 5% is no longer a temporary valuation disturbance. It is becoming an industrial selection mechanism. At these rates, weak AI projects do not merely receive lower multiples — they become uneconomic. signal: The hurdle rate is now a project selection mechanism.

The Second-Order Effects

how capital reshapes the Supercycle

Higher rates accelerate AI concentration

Cash-rich leaders can self-finance; weaker competitors must borrow. At 5%+ sovereign yields, that difference compounds rapidly. Higher rates → higher WACC → fewer viable projects → more M&A → greater concentration. The AI ecosystem may become more concentrated precisely as intelligence becomes commoditised.

Capital rotates from intelligence to conversion

The first AI trade rewarded models, then GPUs, then memory, networking and power. The next rotation is toward businesses that turn intelligence into operating economics: industrial software → automation → robotics → digital twins → productivity. The next scarcity is not AI. It is implementation at scale.

Germany could become Europe's conversion trade

Europe is unlikely to outspend America on frontier models — and it does not need to. Germany's opportunity sits where Europe already holds deep advantage: engineering, automation, industrial software, power systems and manufacturing. If AI moves toward industrial deployment, Europe's apparent weakness can become an advantage.

Strong growth can become bearish for duration

The market paradox: better growth normally supports equities, but when inflation stays elevated, stronger growth → higher yields → higher discount rate → lower long-duration multiples. Winners migrate toward businesses producing current cash flow, not distant optionality.

The market rotation becomes broader

The likely sequence: AI narrative → AI infrastructure → AI bottlenecks → industrial AI → productivity. This is not an exit from AI. It is AI spreading into the rest of the economy — potentially the largest phase of the Supercycle.

Five Takeaways

for boards and investors

  • Stop waiting for cheap capital. The economy is too resilient and inflation too persistent. Build portfolios and investment cases around 5%+ long rates.
  • Move from AI exposure to AI conversion. The next premium belongs to companies turning intelligence into margins, productivity and cash flow.
  • Germany is becoming Europe's most important conversion signal. Its recovery now spans manufacturing, services, employment and investment.
  • Industrial software becomes strategic infrastructure. The layer connecting intelligence to physical assets may become more valuable than another incremental model.
  • ROIC is now the final AI benchmark. Intelligence → utilisation → productivity → cash flow → ROIC > WACC. Anything that fails this chain is not transformation — it is expensive experimentation.

GVI 108.0: growth survives, cheap capital does not — the next winners will not own the most intelligence, they will own the widest productivity spread.
